Introduction

Education:

In addition to acquiring a very qualified mathematics education, the students of our department become individuals who care and respect the academic ethic, are equipped with a critical way of thinking, have the ability to learn, question, research, create and entrepreneur. Our students also are self-confident, able to work both individually and as a part of a team, who follow the developments in their field and become knowledgeable in many different areas.  

 

Program objective (goal):

In accordance with our understanding of education, the goal of our program is to educate our students as individuals who have the important ability of analytical thinking, which is needed in all other sciences and in everyday life, as well as to equip them with information and skills necessary for continuing their education in M. Sc. and Ph. D. Programs both in national and international arenas.

 

In addition, our program ensures that the students of the department acquire the mathematical knowledge necessary for interdisciplinary research, studies in economy, industry, education and other fields.

 

In order to achieve these goals, our department continuously follows the scientific developments and trends in the world, makes the necessary assessments and updates in the program without changing its basic structure.

 

 

The Program:

The first two years of the curriculum of the Department of Mathematics consists of basic mathematics courses and courses providing the backgrounds of computer science. Third and fourth years of the program consist of both basic compulsory courses and technical, non-technical and cultural elective courses. Elective courses enrich the mathematical knowledge of the students and direct them to perform academic studies. In addition, these courses contain various applications of mathematics, so that the students of the department can find jobs in their areas of interests at an appropriate level after their graduation. Furthermore, the program allows the students to choose elective courses from other departments and become knowledgeable in other areas as well.

 

The program of department gives an opportunity to those students who attend certain courses to get Certificate in Mathematical Finance or Cryptography in addition to the B. Sc. Degree in Mathematics.

 

Certificates:

In order to increase job opportunities of our graduates and prepare them for an M. Sc. degree in Mathematical Finance and Cryptography, our department offers two certificate programs which contain courses providing the necessary backgrounds in these areas.

 

  1. Certificate in Mathematical Finance: This program consists of 11 courses and summer practice. Five of the courses are compulsory and four of the courses are elective courses of the Mathematics Department, two of the courses are courses offered at the Departments of Economy and Management. 
  2. Certificate in Cryptography: The program consists of 11 courses and a final project. Six of the courses are compulsory and 5 of the courses are elective courses of the Mathematics Department.

The students of the department can choose their elective courses from the modules prepared for these certificate programs and after completing them, they can get a certificate in Mathematical Finance or Cryptography in addition to their B. Sc. degree.

 

Double Major and Minor Programs:

Students of the Mathematics department can complete Double major and Minor programs at some departments of the Faculty of Engineering as well as at the Departments of Finance and Management. In addition, students from other departments can apply for a Double Major or Minor programs at the Mathematics Department. Students who complete a Double Major program receive two separate diplomas.

 

Academic Staff and Areas of Research:

Academic Staff of the Department of Mathematics consists of 24 faculty members: 5 full professors, 8 associate professors, 5 assistant professors, 2 instructors and 4 research assistants who are experts in their fields, experts in teaching, and active in research. According to the number of faculty members, and the number of publications in SCI and SCI-E journals, our department is one of the leading Mathematics departments in Turkey. The annual number of publications per faculty member is 1.32, and this rate is above the average not only at national but also at international level. Furthermore, the faculty members actively attend and organize scientific meetings in Turkey and abroad. Intensive research activity is performed at the areas of “Analysis”, “Algebra”, “Cryptology”, “Coding Theory”, “Differential Equations”, “Numerical Analysis” and “Time Scales”.

 

Master of Science Program:

Mathematics Department offers two Master of Science programs: M. Sc. with thesis and M. Sc. without thesis. Full time faculty members (see the information at the web page) are prospective advisor in various areas of both pure and applied mathematics. Furthermore, the faculty members of Mathematics Department teach several graduate courses at the interdisciplinary Ph. D. Program (MODES) of the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences. The MODES program provides the possibility to the graduates of Mathematics department to conduct Ph. D. studies in Applied Mathematics.
